Welcome to Undergraduate Studies of
Science and Technology (BSc, 3 years, 2535 h, 180 ECTS)
at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, Poland
New undergraduate studies of Science and Technology at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University are a common project of three faculties of science: Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science; Chemistry; and Biology and Biotechnology. In the framework of these studies the University will provide high quality teaching as well as close contact of students with the solid background knowledge and its technological applications. The best internationally recognized scientists of the University belong to the teaching staff of this new branch of studies. In addition, it is planned to invite known experts and scientists from other institutes as visiting professors.
These undergraduate studies offer a broad-basis program in sciences underlying the basic training for the professional engineers, physicists, biochemists and biophysicists, chemists and mathematicians as well as provide a strong foundation for many other career opportunities.
Training is given through: lectures, exercises, laboratory classes and projects on the fundamental techniques of both classical and quantum domains. These options and projects are related to the modern research expertise in areas such as applied mathematics, astrophysics, biology, solid-state physics, nuclear physics and chemistry, surface chemistry, environment research and new technologies.
A bachelor's degree in science provides strong transferable skills for a variety of careers. Our graduates would enter chemistry, physics and technology related career in scientific or engineering research and development, in science-based industries, medial physics and in teaching. Others would make use of the numeracy and problem solving skills developed during their degree studies to find employment in finance and management. Media and IT-related employment, often engaging physics and computing skills, may hire the most of remaining graduates. Our graduates may choose to continue studying at MCS University or elsewhere in Poland or in the European Union countries.
For all students, there are common mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and technology core lectures. They study a common set of topics during three years. A useful transferable skill is the introductory computer programming. This is an essential tool for the student projects and an important skill for his/her future employer. Further optional lectures on various topics in quantum mechanics, atomic and molecular chemistry, nanosciences, astrophysics, condensed matter physics, chemistry and physics of surfaces as well as molecular biology, biophysics and biochemistry will be given. A large fraction of student’s time is planned to be consumed on development of individual projects. The majority of students will find this an exciting and interesting aspect of their studies.
In addition to the core curricula, students are taught the key skills required to perform modern state-of-the-art experiments. Skills include test and measurement, project planning, report writing, and presentation. Students will use and become familiar with a whole range of sophisticated equipment and associated software. Experiments will complement all core modules, giving a deep insight into functioning of the modern science.
